EEDA acknowledges the stress and strain that caring for a loved one with disabilities presents. Overnight Respite is a scheduled, proactive experience for adults and children aged eight years and older who live with their family in Suffolk or Nassau County. EEDA's Overnight Respite house focuses on providing a recreational experience for program participants to make the house a place people want to stay and a place families feel comfortable leaving their loved one.
Dear Respite Staff, My family and I thank you for the expert and loving care you provided to Elana during her two recent stays at your Overnight Respite house. Not only has Elana returned looking fit, fresh, happy, clean, and healthy, but the day program staff made a point to emphasize how wonderful your staff was at drop-off and pick-up each day and how you helped her with some tearful transitions along the way. They, and we, are always reassured and impressed with the care offered by EEDA and cannot explain sufficiently how much your services help us lead a fuller and happier life overall. With your help over the last few years we have enjoyed quality time without caregiving stress, and I have completed advanced professional trainings and earned new credentials. Overall, EEDA Overnight Respite has allowed us to love and care for Elana while attending to matters that would be more difficult without this treasured resource. In addition, Elana benefits from the growth and independence she gains during each stay, which are skills necessary for her life and future. We are so grateful and hope that EEDA may one day have a long-term opening for Elana because you have proven through the years we’ve used your respite (and even through many staff changes) that certain quality of care, ethical, and professional standards are adhered to at all times. I have many peers with special needs adult children who cannot feel as reassured as we do when we find alternate resources for Elana. Many are fearful to even try finding care; we are not because we know it is very important for her to trust that others in life will help her. We will not live forever. I wish I could tell you all, each and every one of you, how much your help and care for Elana means to us. Words are insufficient. With sincere appreciation,
Aviva, Dan, Elana and Family

Dear Respite House,
This is a letter of sincere gratitude.
I know this is rather late, but I want to thank you all for taking such good care of Andre. It would not have been possible for you to take Andre because you had that weekend specifically for the little ones only. However, Luis made every effort so I could attend a wedding in Pennsylvania. We had a blast and a reunion with family and relatives.
EEDA has been a tremendous help for my family in all these years and I am truly grateful. God bless you all.

Dear EEDA,
I just wanted to drop you a little note thanking you for your wonderful staff.
John attended respite Saturday-Monday morning. I was a little nervous, as this was his first time attending at your facility. Once I met the staff there Saturday, I knew that he would be more than fine—that he would have a great weekend, and he did! Your respite weekend could not have come at a better time. His dad and I haven’t been together in six years. His father only takes him on Sundays, from 9-5 (never had an overnight). About two weeks ago, his dad suffered a heart attack. Thankfully, he’s ok and on the mend, but it’s nice to know that a place like yours offers a break to single parents, especially ones like me that have very little opportunity for relief. I have put him in weekends at camp in the past, but because of my financial situation, spending $350 a shot is not always doable.
You are a lifesaver, as is your staff.
I am also happy that although John will be seventeen in October, he was placed in the fifteen and younger group. He is a small guy for his age, and on a lower functioning level, so I am glad he wasn’t in with bigger guys.
I can’t thank you enough for all EEDA and your amazing staff do for parents like me. It helps give parents of special needs children time to recharge so we can continue trying to be the best parents we can!
