Crisis Supports
For those in need of immediate assistance…

Mobile Crisis Team:
Available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, this program is designed to fill in the gaps of the traditional service delivery system. The Crisis Intervention Team is comprised of Crisis Field Representatives that will help or assist families with a developmentally disabled family member living at home in Nassau or Suffolk County. The Crisis Field Representative will meet with the family in their home to develop a plan that addresses the crisis. A crisis is an individualized need that varies from family to family. Situations can be as serious as the illness or death of a caregiver, support during medical appointments, or with behavioral challenges.

Overnight Crisis House:
This natural extension of the Mobile Crisis Team is a safe environment where an individual in crisis can have a short term stay. Up to four individuals can be served at a time. When an individual stays with us, a plan will quickly be established in conjunction with the individual, the family, the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, and other interested involved parties for both short and long term outcomes. Families can be confident that their loved one, including those with challenging behaviors, will be cared for by professionally trained staff in a home-like environment.

Overnight Respite:
EEDA acknowledges the stress and strain that caring for a loved one with disabilities presents. Overnight Respite is a scheduled proactive experience for children aged eight and up and adults who live with their family in Suffolk and Nassau County. Respite is available seven days per week for six individuals at a time.

Kim, Luis, Casina and Greg attended the Angles for Autism dinner dance hosted by the Jack Fanning Memorial Foundation. Since 2001, the foundation has donated almost $500,000 to needy organizations to advance the lives of those with autism. The foundation has also given us $20,000 towards our new respite house. Although we did not win any of the beautiful baskets that were donated for raffle prizes, we got to spend an evening with wonderful, caring people. It was a great night.

A letter we received from a parent to our Respite House staff:

Dear EEDA Staff,

My family and I thank you for the expert and loving care you provided to Elana during her two recent stays at your respite house. Not only has Elana returned looking fit, fresh, happy, clean and healthy but the day program staff made a point to emphasize how wonderful your staff was at drop off and pick up each day and how you helped her with some tearful transitions along the way. They, and we, are always reassured and impressed with the care offered by EEDA and cannot explain sufficiently how much your services help us lead a fuller and happier life overall. With your help over the last few years we have enjoyed quality time without caregiving stress, and I have completed advanced professional trainings and earned new credentials. Overall EEDA respite has allowed us to love and care for Elana while attending to matters that would be more difficult without this treasured resource. In addition Elana benefits from the growth and independence she gains during each stay, which are skills necessary for her life and future.

We are so grateful and hope that EEDA may one day have a long term opening for Elana because you have proven through the years we’ve used your respite ( and even through many staff changes ) that a certain quality of care, ethical and professional standards are adhered to at all times. I have many peers with special needs adult children who cannot feel as reassured as we do when we find alternate resources for Elana. Many are fearful to even try finding care ; we are not, because we know it is very important for her to trust that others in life will help her. We will not live forever.

I wish I could tell you all, each and every one of you, how much your help and care for Elana means to us. Words are insufficient.

With sincere appreciation,

Aviva, Dan, Elana and Family

A letter we received from a parent to our Respite House staff:
---------------
Dear Luis, Michelle, Danielle, Stephanie, Eric, Carl, Jimmy and all the staff of EEDA,

This is a letter of sincere gratitude.
I know this is rather late but I want to thank you all for taking such good care of Andre last June 27, 28, & 29th, 2015. It would not have been possible for you to take Andre because you had that weekend specifically for the little ones only. However, Luis made every effort and arrangement so I could attend the wedding in Pennsylvania. We had a blast and a reunion with family and relatives.
EEDA has been a tremendous help for my family in all these years and I am truly grateful. God bless you all.

Bernadette & family

An email testimonial from a parent to our Respite House staff:

-----------------
Michelle, I just wanted to drop you a little note thanking you for your wonderful staff.

John attended respite Saturday-Monday morning. I was a little nervous, as this was his first time attending at your facility. Once I met the staff there Saturday, I knew that he would be more than fine---that he would have a great weekend, and he did!  Your weekend could not have come at a better time. His dad and I haven’t been together in 6 years. His father only takes him on Sundays, from 9-5 (never had an overnight). About 2 weeks ago, his dad suffered a heart attack. Thankfully, he’s ok and on the mend, but it’s nice to know that a place like yours offers a break to single parents, especially one like me that have very little opportunities for relief. I have put him in weekends at Camp *** *** in the past, but because of my financial situation, spending $350 a shot is not always “doable”.

You are a life saver, as is your staff. I’m not sure how often you offer these childrens weekends, but I am grateful I at least got to make use of one.

I am also happy that although John will be 17 in October, he was placed in the 15 and younger. He is a small guy for his age and on a lower functioning level, so I am glad he wasn’t in with bigger guys.

I can’t thank you enough for all EEDA and your amazing staff do for parents like me. It helps give parents of special needs children time to re-charge so we can continue trying to be the best parents we can!

Thank you so much!

Mary
