The East End Consumer Council was started in 1992 by Lisa Meyer Fertal, Jim Martinsen, and a small group of parents, all raising children with developmental disabilities, residing on the east end of Long Island. The purpose of the group was to bring more family support services to our under served geographic location.
Two major areas were identified as critical, one being respite and the other recreation. Two grants were written and funded through the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (NYSOMRDD), to address these needs. Both programs have expanded tremendously and
are operating successfully to date.
It is the spirit and intent of EEDA to provide
programs of excellence that will promote life enhancement for persons with
developmental disabilities. We strive to create person centered supports
that will afford each individual the opportunity to reach their
goals.
